Nippon Paint NIOZ - Heavy Duty Industrial Applications

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Nippon Paint NIOZ is a premium two-pack, solvent-based inorganic zinc rich primer formulated with moisture-curing ethyl silicate and high-purity zinc dust. Engineered for maximum cathodic protection, it acts as a "sacrificial" layer to prevent rust and corrosion on steel substrates even in the most aggressive environments.

It is specifically designed for heavy-duty industrial and marine applications, such as offshore platforms, refineries, and chemical plants. With its outstanding resistance to weathering, abrasion, impact, and extreme temperatures (up to 400°C), NIOZ serves as the ultimate foundation for high-performance coating systems.

Technical Data

  • Type: Two-pack solvent-based Ethyl Silicate and Zinc Dust.

  • Color & Finish: Grey with a Matt finish.

  • Mixing Ratio: 1 part by weight of Binder (Pack A) to 1.43 parts by weight of Zinc Dust (Pack B).

  • Drying Time (at 30°C): Touch Dry: ~5 minutes; Hard Dry: ~2 hours.

  • Heat Resistance: Continuous dry service temperature up to 400°C.

  • Theoretical Coverage: 9.4 m²/litre (at 50 microns DFT).

  • Pot Life: 6 hours after mixing (at 25-30°C).

Application Instruction

  1. Mixing: Slowly add the Zinc Dust (Pack B) into the Binder (Pack A) while stirring constantly with a power mixer. Continue mixing until the powder is fully dispersed and the mixture is homogeneous. Filter the mixture through a 60-80 mesh screen before use.

  2. Method: Preferably applied by compressed air spray using an agitated pressure pot to prevent zinc dust from settling. Small areas may be touched up by brush, but roller application is not recommended.

  3. Thinning: If necessary, add 10% – 20% of Nippon ZS-100 Thinner by volume for air spray. Do not use unapproved thinners as they may interfere with the curing process.

Recommended Coating System

  • System A (Severe Marine): 1 coat NIOZ (Primer) + 1 coat Nippon 8048 (Intermediate) + 1 coat Nippon PU Recoatable Finish (Topcoat).

  • System B (Heavy Industrial): 1 coat NIOZ (Primer) + 1 coat Nippon EA4 Finish (Topcoat).

  • System C (Single Coat): 1 coat NIOZ at 75 microns DFT for temporary shop priming or standalone protection.

Surface Preparation

  1. Abrasive Blasting: Steel must be abrasive blasted to a minimum standard of Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1:2007) or SSPC-SP10 (Near-White Blast Cleaning).

  2. Surface Profile: Achieve a sharp, angular surface profile of 50–75 microns to ensure maximum mechanical adhesion.

  3. Contaminant Removal: Surfaces must be dry and free from oil, grease, abrasive residues, and chemical salts before application.

  4. Environmental Limits: Do not apply when relative humidity exceeds 85% or when the surface temperature is less than 3°C above the dew point.

  5. Re-blasting: If "rust bloom" (flash rust) occurs on the blasted steel before the primer is applied, the surface must be re-blasted to the original Sa 2½ standard.
